LED visible light communication Li-Fi technology breakthrough
Li-Fi is a new wireless transmission technology that uses visible light spectrum for data transmission and was invented by German physicist Harald Haas. The technology transmits data by changing the frequency of the lighting of the room lighting. As long as the lights are turned on indoors, Internet access is not required without WiFi.
According to a notice issued by the university, researchers use light waves emitted by micron-sized light-emitting diodes to enable Li-Fi networks to use less than 0.5 watts of power within 10 meters to transmit data at 1.1 Gbps. The power consumption is only 10 watts. 5% of LED bulb power consumption.
The study was led by Professor Harald Haas of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and completed with the United States pureLiFi. Harald Haas is hailed as one of the world leaders in LED technology.
Visible light communication has become a contestable spot in the field of international communication research in countries such as the United States, Japan, and Europe. Many experts believe that Li-Fi represents the future of the mobile Internet. Li-Fi will be much cheaper than WiFi because it uses visible light waves instead of radio waves to transmit signals. The spectrum is 10,000 times larger than the radio frequency spectrum and higher data density can be obtained.
Professor Harald Hass said that Li-Fi is transforming wireless communication technology and can be a booster for the rise of the Internet of Things. He said that on the basis of this research breakthrough, he will continue to devote great efforts to the development of Li-Fi technology and make it an Internet transmission method in the very near future.
A U.S. market research firm pointed out that the total sales of the visible light communication technology market are expected to increase significantly from 96 million U.S. dollars in 2012 to 6.14 billion U.S. dollars in 2018.
In China, there are also companies that are conducting research on Li-Fi network technology. In October of last year, Fudan University successfully realized the use of visible light in the house to transmit network signals. The maximum rate of transmission at that time was 3.25G, and the average internet speed was 150M.
In addition, Qinshang Optoelectronics signed a cooperation agreement with Tsinghua University in May 2013 for the construction of LED wireless optical communication projects. The two sides formally started the construction of a joint university-enterprise research institute in the field of optical communications and strive to build it into a national-level platform. At present, both parties have successfully developed Lifi mobile phone version samples.
