Stanford develops the fastest driverless car

Google's driverless car was once stopped by the police because it was too slow. So everyone thinks that the current driverless car can only run at low speed.

But the driverless car developed by Stanford University can be used for braking. The name of this driverless car is Shelly, which was modified on a prototype of the Audi TTS. This driverless car can reach speeds of up to 120 mph (about 193 km/h).

Although driving on an empty track seems to be much simpler than driving on a daily road, doing so also helps to improve the safety of driverless cars.

The history of Stanford’s driverless cars dates back to the 2005 Nevada Desert Challenge. Since then, they have become a strong contender for Google in this field. Although Stanford’s driverless cars can drive, there is still a long way to go before drones enter the mass market.

Shelly's driverless car was developed by Stanford's Dynamic Design Lab and the Volkswagen Electronics Research Lab.

On the track, Shelly's average speed is 50-70 mph (about 80-112 km/h) and the highest is 110-120 mph (about 117-193 km/h). At this high speed, researchers can not only observe the computer's mastery of cornering technology, but also improve the algorithm in the face of "changing behavior" and improve the safety of driverless driving on the highway.

Researchers at Stanford University said that studying the extreme speed of driverless cars on the track can help simulate the dangers of driverless cars on ordinary roads. To make Shelley run faster, the R&D team used the racer's ability to take advantage of the various features of the car while driving, and then let Shelly continue to learn and imitate through machine learning algorithms. After continuous training, Shelly's speed can be compared with the racing driver. Anyone can do this is amazing, let alone it is just a robot.

Although the original intention of the Stanford R&D team is to make driverless driving safer, but in the future it is possible to let the driverless car compete with the racer, just like people and machines play chess. I believe that one day, driverless cars will be beyond the reach of racers.
