Xilinx Introduces Industry's First "Soft" Defined Network Solution

Beijing, April 1, 2014 – Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), a global leader in All Programmable technologies and devices, today announced the industry's first “soft” at the Interop 2014 network communications show in Las Vegas Define a network ("Softly" Defined Networks) solution that extends programmability and intelligence from the control layer to the data layer. The new SDNet software definition specification environment enables programmable data layer functional design, and functional specifications are automatically compiled into Xilinx's All Programmable FPGAs and SoCs.

Unlike traditional SDN architectures that use fixed data layer hardware and connect to the control layer through a narrow southbound API, SDNet uses a programmable data layer to support content intelligence and rich southbound API control layer connectivity, enabling breakthroughs. Innovative features, including:

1. Support independent wire speed services to avoid the complexity of various protocols

2. Provide flexible services in a process-based manner

3. Support revolutionary innovative “non-disruptive” operation for instant upgrade while running at 100% line rate

These unique capabilities enable service providers and multi-system operators (MSOs) to offer unique and differentiated services in a flexible manner without disrupting existing services or re-certifying hardware quality or On-site service, which provides service providers with the potential to increase revenue, can save significant capital and operating expenses as never before, and can significantly shorten the time-to-market of products. Network equipment vendors are also able to achieve the same benefits through the feature-rich and flexible SDNet platform, enabling them to achieve greater differentiation by deploying content-aware data layer hardware programmed in the SDNet environment.

The soft-defined network solutions implemented by SDNet and Xilinx All Programmable FPGAs and SoCs have the following additional advantages:

1. Better and highly flexible quality of service (QoS)

2, process and session awareness

3, fully programmable hardware data layer and I / O

4, wire speed support network function virtualization (NFV), including a variety of user-defined customization features

5. Scalable line rate between 1G and 400G

Nick McKeown, a professor of computer science at Stanford University, said: "The first phase of SDN (Software-Defined Networking) allows data centers and WAN operators to leverage software to customize and enhance network capabilities. In the next phase, we expect to exceed fixed-function hardware. The function of the data layer appears. For example, adding high programmability and more advanced functions to the data layer, accessing the data layer through the standard software API interface, etc., means that network resources can achieve more intelligent and efficient management, thereby accelerating the pace of innovation."

Loring Wirbel, senior analyst at research firm Linley Group, said: "The software-defined specification environment introduced by Xilinx can create and adjust network elements with high-level descriptions, far beyond the SDN based on OpenFlow protocol. Control and data layers Important features of processing can be defined when building network nodes. This tool allows system architects to specify and deploy precise application services without having to understand the underlying device architecture or master complex programming languages. More importantly, there is currently no Any equipment manufacturer, OEM, and SDN software expert have provided such tools."

Hemant Dhulla, vice president of communications business at Xilinx, said: "Xilin is combining new software design technologies with All Programmable chip products to make the next generation of smarter networks and data centers more possible. SDNet's revolutionary breakthrough in flexibility, functionality and productivity, coupled with the high flexibility of Xilinx All Programmable devices, has created the industry's first software-defined data layer solution for soft-defined networks."

Xilinx will demonstrate the SDNet solution at booth #0066 during Interop 2014. You can also contact the Xilinx local sales representative for the demo video.
