"Luftstrom" is committed to improving the efficiency of rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles

Munich, Germany, July 2, 2015 – The “Luftstrom” project aims to study how to charge electric vehicle batteries more efficiently. Luftstrom (Chinese: Airflow) will help accelerate the pace of green transportation. In the next three years, 12 partners from the German automotive industry (including component suppliers such as Infineon) and the scientific community will work together on this project. The adoption of new power semiconductor devices is expected to reduce the charging loss and ultimately achieve almost no noise charging.

Electric cars are mainly charged at night. However, for example, during charging, the charging device and the voltage regulator generate heat, which needs to be dissipated by the fan of the water cooling system. This can cause considerable noise. As part of the Luftstrom project, electronic power components reduce charge loss by 30%. This means less waste heat – due to the lower heat dissipation, the heat sink is smaller and quieter to work. Components that have been extremely low in loss, such as auxiliary power supplies, do not even need to be equipped with water cooling devices that were previously required. This means that noisy fans can be used.

The key to low-loss power electronics is the technologically advanced power semiconductors based on gallium nitride (GaN) or silicon carbide (SiC). Therefore, the Luftstrom project will also determine how to reliably use such power semiconductors in charging devices, voltage regulators, and auxiliary power inverters. The results of its research will promote the transformation of future electric vehicles into air-cooled or fanless systems.

The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) contributed approximately 3.9 million euros to the Luftstrom research project. Infineon Technologies is the project responsible agency.

Project partners from the scientific community and the automotive industry, including component manufacturers

The partners involved in the Luftstrom project come from all aspects of the automotive industry chain, who are producers or users of these new systems. 12 project partners include AVL Software and FuncTIons GmbH, BMW AG, Daimler AG, Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Components Technology (IISB), Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences, UK Infineon Technologies AG, Robert Bosch GmbH, Aachen University of Technology, Siemens AG, Hannover Leibniz University and Volkswagen AG.

About Infineon

Infineon Technologies AG is the world's leading semiconductor technology company, addressing three key challenges for modern society through product and system solutions: energy efficiency, mobility and security. In fiscal year 2014 (ending September 30), the company's sales amounted to 4.3 billion euros and it has approximately 29,800 employees worldwide. In January 2015, Infineon acquired US International Rectifier, a leading supplier of power management technology with annual revenues of US$1.1 billion (FY2014, which ends on June 29), approximately 4 , 200 employees. Infineon is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange (ticker symbol: IFX) and the US over-the-counter market OTCQX InternaTIonal Premier (ticker symbol: IFNNY).

Infineon in China

Infineon Technologies AG officially entered the Chinese market in 1995. Since the establishment of the first company in Wuxi in 1996, Infineon's business has grown very rapidly. With more than 1,800 employees in China, it has become an important driving force for Infineon's Asia Pacific and global business development. Infineon has established a complete industrial chain covering R&D, production, sales, marketing and technical support in China, and has carried out in-depth research with leading domestic enterprises and universities in sales, technology research and development, and personnel training.
