Philips OLED lighting application analysis

Philips Technology hopes to make the OLED thinner, can be processed into four corners, triangles and circles, and has a high degree of freedom. It first attracts designers in the fields of architectural design, industrial design and apparel design, not limited to Lighting use. Denneman of Philips Lighting said that the company's OLED lighting is "technically OK" and has received a small number of orders.

In fact, the Philips-based plant in Aachen, Germany, has installed a production unit consisting of an organic material and a metal material evaporation chamber in series for the production of OLED lighting fixtures. The device is capable of producing OLED panels using a 400 mm x 500 mm glass substrate. Although it has not yet entered the mass production stage, it has been able to buy OLED lighting fixtures on a unit basis from Philips Electronics' homepage. The lighting fixtures provided are divided into 30 types according to the shape and the color of the light (red, green, blue, and white). The company is likely to introduce a larger number of OLED products by the beginning of 2010.

The luminous efficiency is 10 to 20 lm/W.

At this stage, the OLED panel that Philips Technology can produce has a luminous efficiency of only 10 to 20 lm/W, which is comparable to incandescent lamps and lower than LEDs. Although Dietrich Bertram, the company's OLED development manager, said that “80 lm/W was achieved in research and development”, in actual production, the fastest estimate of 50 lm/W equivalent to bulb-type fluorescent lamps takes 3 years, and the higher efficiency requires 5 More than a year. Poor efficiency has become one of the reasons why OLEDs cannot be used in general lighting applications at this stage.

However, the application of OLEDs to decorative lighting cannot be said to be helpless. According to KristinKnappstein, manager of OLED development at Philips Technology, it can be said that it is precisely because of the use of existing light sources that it cannot become a competitor of OLED lighting. Different shapes of OLED illuminants have been “respected by designers” and OLEDs are high value-added products. Has a new lighting use.

Philips Technology believes that the next stage of OLED is as general lighting. At the lighting show, the company exhibited lighting fixtures arranged in thin-plate OLED panels that were prototyped in cooperation with Philips Design. Plate illumination can also be achieved by LEDs with light guides. However, when an LED is used, the light guide plate generates light loss. It is said that even if the luminous efficiency is 50 to 80 lm/W, the actual efficiency is lowered to 30 to 40 lm/W. In contrast, OLED illumination itself is surface-emitting, requiring less optical components and less optical losses. Knappstein of Philips Technology said: "Because of the high efficiency of the system, it can be called 'green'".

The idea of Philips lighting is to use the light source differently according to the characteristics, apply the OLED to the illumination that needs to diffuse the light, and apply the LED to the spotlight illumination. Since OLED lighting can use digital switch control and dimming control like LEDs, OLEDs are also suitable for the aforementioned "smart lighting" systems.
