The history of street lighting

According to US media reports, there are 55 million street lamps on the roads in the United States today, providing lighting for 250 million cars. The emergence of lighting has brought about tremendous changes for mankind.

The history of street lighting

So, do you know the history of road lighting? What is the ancient street lighting? Let's introduce the history of street lighting through 10 iconic events!

1. In ancient Rome, the rich used vegetable oil lamps to illuminate their doorsteps. There are special slaves responsible for lighting, extinguishing lights and watching lights.

In 2.1417, the Mayor of London ordered all families to hang lanterns outdoors during the winter nights. This is the first public street lighting organized by the government.

In 3.1802, the Scottish inventor William Murdoch launched a campaign to illuminate more efficient streets. His gas lamp illuminates the exterior of the Soho foundry and shows it to the public. Five years later, London had the first street illuminated with gas lamps.

In 4.1816, Baltimore became the first city in the United States to install street lighting. In 1820, Paris followed.

In 5.1878, Paris installed the world's first arc street light. Three years later, a 4000-inch arc street light was installed, effectively replacing the gas lamp installed on the lamp post.

In 6.1879, Edison successfully made an incandescent light bulb with carbon fiber as a filament, which changed the world and promoted the development of light bulbs for street lamps.

7. Low pressure sodium lamps were invented in Europe in the 1930s. These lamps include a removable outer casing and a vacuum insulation layer that illuminates with a low pressure sodium vapor discharge.

8. American Nick Holonyak Jr. developed the first practical visible light-emitting diode (LED) in 1962.

9. In 1965, GE Corporation of the United States introduced high-pressure sodium lamps (HIDs), which have superior color and efficiency compared to low-pressure sodium lamps. Currently, HID lamps are still the most common type of street light on Earth.

10. Today's LEDs have a longer life and produce better light, using less energy than HID lamps. Although LEDs accounted for only a small portion of American street lights a few years ago, the pace of adoption is leaps and bounds.

We have come a long way since the ancient Roman era. Moreover, due to the rapid rise of LEDs, HID street lights may soon disappear like the previous ones.
