Underwriters Laboratories (UL), which specializes in product safety testing and certification, today announced the acquisition of Luminaire Testing Labo ratory, Inc. (LTL). The acquisition is expected to strengthen UL's leadership position in the strategic market for lighting product safety testing.
Located in Allenton, Pa., LTL is one of five laboratories accredited by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and qualified to test ENERGY STAR LED lighting products. And has 20 years of experience in energy efficiency testing of lighting products. In addition to providing energy efficiency testing, LTL also provides a number of performance testing services for luminaires and lighting equipment. LTL is also an advanced organization that actively promotes the development of photometric test standards. The standards that have been assisted include the IES-LM79, the main standard used by ENERGY STAR to regulate LED lighting products.
Keith Williams, President and CEO of UL, pointed out that the evolution of LED technology and energy efficiency is driving innovation in the lighting industry and is expected to drive the LED lighting product market to grow substantially in the next 15 years. The acquisition of LTL not only reflects UL's mission to promote global public safety, but also responds to third-party testing and certification requirements for LED product performance and energy efficiency.
After the merger officially takes effect, LTL will become part of UL's Verification Service business.
