Tesla was once a leader in the electric vehicle industry, but with the autopilot system causing deaths and too many products, the company's image in the minds of consumers is plummeting. A recent survey conducted by US authorities shows that Tesla has become one of the most unreliable car brands.
According to the US "Washington Post" report, the consumer product survey of the automobile product is the authoritative "consumer report" magazine of the United States, and the investigation report was released on Monday. In the reliability survey, Tesla ranked only 25 out of a total of 29 vendors.
Many of these consumers report that Tesla's new Model X (SUV) model has experienced a series of functional failures, with side-opening failures becoming a hallmark of its flaws.
In previous surveys, Tesla ranked first in the industry in terms of performance of automobiles.
For Tesla's other model, Model S, consumers believe that its reliability index has improved compared to last year, so it is worth recommending. Last year, the Consumer Report pointed out that the failure rate of Model S was higher than the peer average.
Tesla's Model X went on sale last year and sold for $74,000. Consumers say there are too many failures in this product, distributed in the door, power supply, in-vehicle electronics, car locks, and related weather systems.
In the Consumer Reports survey of more than a dozen high-end, medium-volume SUVs, Tesla Model X ranked first in terms of reliability.
Jake Fisher, director of automotive product evaluation at Consumer Reports, said the Tesla Model X's reliability rankings were down, which was not unexpected, as Model X had previously experienced mechanical failure.
He said that on the basic platform of the Model X model, Tesla added a lot of complicated functions, such as the front door is automatically opened, the middle row of seats is powered, all of these designs will reduce the reliability of the entire platform.
Previously, Tesla's head, Musk, also said that in the design of Model X, he was a bit too bold and avant-garde. In a public occasion in February, he said: "If time can be traced back, I think it would be a better idea to integrate less functionality in the first generation of Model X. We have some pride in the Model X model." However, Masco still emphasizes that Model X is the best product ever seen in the automotive market.
For the Consumer Reports ranking, a Tesla spokesperson said the survey was conducted last year and the company has resolved some of the failures in the product.
Tesla also pointed out the awards and honors that other industry organizations have awarded to the company. For example, auto industry consulting firm AutoPacific recently listed Tesla as "the most satisfactory high-end car brand."
The spokesperson said that in the past 12 months, the number of failures in Model X has fallen by 92%, indicating that Tesla can respond quickly and continuously to product failures.
In the middle of this year, Tesla's autonomous driving system caused the world's first automatic driving death, which caused global public opinion concerns about the safety of unmanned vehicles.
In the Consumer Report's survey, many consumers also expressed deep concern about how Tesla and other car companies design and market "semi-automatic driving technology", including Tesla's Autopilot feature.
It is believed that Tesla is too hasty in autopilot functions and is put into use when the technology is not yet mature. Recently, the German government requested that Tesla's product marketing should not use the words such as autonomous driving, and Tesla also began to shrink, such as strict requirements for drivers to put their hands on the steering wheel when using the automatic driving function.
