The world's first surface mount LED with five independent control chips, top headlight application

OSRAM has expanded its automotive portfolio to release surface mount Oslon Black Flat S multi-chip LEDs for ADB and matrix headlights.

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors has launched the Oslon Black Flat S product line, the world's first surface mount LED with up to five independently controllable chips.

At the same time, with the contrast achieved by the package, the product range can be used on ADB (Adaptive Beam Adjustment) headlights. The switchable light section enables strong light to avoid the oncoming vehicles and pedestrians and vehicles on the farther roads in front of the car, making driving more comfortable and safer. Thanks to their improved thermal properties, these high-power LEDs offer additional system advantages and are ideally suited for entry-level ADB solutions, even for compact cars.

The new three-chip version of the Oslon Black Flat S series was launched in October 2016, and the four-chip version and the five-chip version will be available in January 2017.

Top technology

The launch of the new product represents a significant expansion of the LED portfolio in this application area. These powerful chips use the most advanced technology.

This is the first time that the illuminated surface no longer needs to be in contact with the package wiring. The square chip emits light that is also very uniform and easier to optically design. Each chip is independently controllable and provides 100% proof of high contrast between adjacent chips. These features allow the glare to actively avoid the vehicles coming in from the opposite side and the pedestrians and vehicles on the farther roads in front of the car. The contrast is very high. Excellent road light distribution always benefits the drivers on the road.

In addition to the glare-free high beam, the Oslon Black Flat S can be used to implement other adaptive LED forward illumination functions such as corner lights and urban lights without the need for any mechanical components.

Optimized design

Previously only Osram Ostar Headlamp Pro had independently controllable chips, and the Oslon Black Flat S series now incorporates this functionality into its portfolio. In addition, the chip is surface mount and compatible with standard processes.

Compared to the Oslon Black Flat, the Oslon Black Flat S features an optimized symmetrical contact surface design for further improved heat dissipation and cycle stability. The combination of excellent thermal management and standard processes reduces system cost. With a current load of up to 1.5A, it provides enough road illumination in just three light segments, while the five-chip version produces up to 2,000 lumens of light.
