Freescale Introduces First LED Backlight Product

On September 8, 2008, Austin, Texas, USA and Tokyo, Japan, in order to meet the market demand for energy-saving and environment-friendly light-emitting diode (LED) technology, Freescale Semiconductor is currently introducing the first LED in its power management IC family. Backlight products. The new 10-channel MC34844 white LED driver IC is designed for LED backlighting in notebook computers and flat panel monitors with screens between 10 and 27 inches.

According to IMS Research, the market for semiconductors used in backlight applications (including LED driver ICs) is expected to grow from $1.1 billion in 2008 to $2 billion in 2012. Currently, LED backlights are very popular in small liquid crystal displays (LCDs) for mobile phones, GPS devices, and PDAs. However, LEDs are now being implemented in large LCD modules used in laptops, monitors and large screen TVs.

We expect LED backlighting for notebooks, monitors and TVs to grow strongly, and IMSResearch market research analyst JamieFox said that especially in notebook PCs, the market generally predicts rapid growth from 2008 to 2010.

LED backlighting is a breakthrough technology that will stimulate innovation and growth in the LCD market, bringing more energy-efficient environmentally friendly LCD displays to the market, said Arman Naghavi, vice president and general manager of analog, mixed-signal and power divisions at Freescale. As a leading analog product supplier, Freescale is able to provide advanced driver ICs for LED backlight applications. As growth opportunities extend from laptops and monitors to LCD TVs and automotive, consumer and industrial lighting applications, the future of the LED backlight market is limitless.

Energy saving, no mercury

LED technology has many advantages over traditional cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) lighting systems that are widely used in conventional LCD displays. LED backlights enhance the user's viewing experience, with a more flexible backlight architecture, making the display design lighter and more secure. Compared with traditional CCFL, the advantages of LED backlighting include higher efficiency (brighter in given power), Lower power consumption, five times longer life, increased durability, and 100 times higher contrast for clearer screen clarity.

The main advantage of LED technology is that it does not contain mercury, a substance that is harmful to humans. Mercury is a key material in CCFL lighting systems, and 99% of existing LED TV displays use this material. In Europe, the Directive on the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electronic Equipment (RoHS) has stipulated that manufacturers must transfer to mercury-free LEDs.

Growth market: TV and lighting

Freescale's analog and power management solutions are at the heart of countless energy-saving technologies used in consumer electronics, bulk appliances, automotive systems and engine control. With the introduction of the LED backlight driver IC family, Freescale plans to enter the growing backlight market, such as large-screen digital TV and commercial lighting. Traditional LCD TVs that do not employ LED backlight technology are the main energy consumer in the home. By allowing manufacturers to adopt a lighter and lighter form factor, LED backlights with local dimming can reduce power consumption by up to 30%.

Freescale plans to introduce LED backlight solutions for LCD TVs in the first quarter of 2009. The company is also preparing to enter the LED lighting market for automotive, commercial and residential applications in the same year, which is expected to finally announce the end of the LCD TV market.

About MC34844LED Driver IC

Freescale's MC34844IC is the industry's most compact LED backlight driver IC solution for large notebook and monitor applications. This highly integrated device can drive up to 160 LEDs in 10 parallelstrings (this professional word is uncertain, please give), with more powerful LED control than any other single-chip solution available today.

The MC34844 provides an excellent level of intelligence for LED backlighting. The Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) generator supports LED dimming, which is a way to help improve picture quality and make the screen last longer. Through light and temperature reduction compensation, the device also delivers consistent performance throughout the life of the LED.

Using the device's I2C/SMBus interface, developers can design LED LED current, PWM frequency, and PWM duty cycle. To drive more LEDs, multiple devices can be synchronized. The MC34844 reduces the burden on the controller generated by the PWM. The PWM signal does not need to traverse the printed circuit board because it can cause noise and electromagnetic compatibility problems.
