According to foreign media reports on November 1, Samsung plans to invest $1 billion in the Austin, Texas plant early next year to upgrade its mobile chip production line. Samsung is still packing up the Galaxy Note7, but still decided to invest $1 billion in the Austin, Texas, facility. Samsung said on the 1st that the investment will be put into production early next year and will be used to expand electronic semiconductor manufacturing. Samsung uses Exynos chips for its smartphones, but also for semiconductors in storage, memory and batteries. Most of the components in the Galaxy S7 phone are produced at the Samsung factory.
Samsung Note7 was discontinued after battery problems caused some phones to overheat and explode. But this obviously does not prevent Samsung from expanding its mobile chip production. Companies like Intel and GlobalFoundries also have manufacturing facilities in the United States. Intel recently signed an agreement to manufacture ARM-based mobile chips and will provide smartphone chips for its LG phones manufactured in the US.
Chip makers are also using more resources to make chips for IoT devices. Samsung offers ArTIk IoT chips, including processors, memory and wireless components manufactured by the company. Most of Samsung's manufacturing plants are located in South Korea. Samsung opened the Austin factory in 2007 and was originally used to manufacture NAND flash chips. Samsung invested $3.5 billion at the time to start the plant. According to Samsung, the Austin facility covers 2.3 million square feet and currently employs 3,000 people.
