Micrel Semiconductor Introduces LED Driver Solution MIC2299

Micrel Semiconductor has introduced the MIC2299, the most powerful and powerful LED driver solution for portable devices. This high-efficiency step-up DC-DC converter guarantees 3.5 amps of integrated conversion current with a net output of 7-12 watts and is available in a 3mm x 3mm MLF(R) micro package. The MIC2299 is targeted at photographic flash and flashlight applications for mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras and emergency lights, and is currently in volume production starting at $1.70 per unit.

Ralph Munster, director of marketing for power products at Micrel Semiconductor, said: "McRell's MIC2299 can guarantee 3.5 amps of switching current, and the solution occupies only 0.25 square inches, which is not harmful to portable devices. A new standard is set for high-brightness LED drivers with valuable battery life. In addition, the solution's output voltage can be as high as 30 volts, enabling up to eight high-brightness series LED illumination."

The powerful high-current integrated switch in the MIC2299 enables the device to deliver at least 1 amp of current to two series-connected WLEDs (white light-emitting diodes) or 750 mA to three series-connected WLEDs. This enables powerful flashlight illumination in dark environments or bright flash effects for low-light conditions for improved picture quality. LED brightness can be controlled by applying a voltage or PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal to the luma pins. The IC operates at a fixed switching frequency of 2 MHz with an efficiency of up to 90%. The MIC2299 solution requires only a miniature low profile sensor and a small ceramic capacitor to reduce footprint and minimize solution cost. Finally, the solution matches the current operational array of battery architectures with an input voltage of 2.5-10 volts.
