Conexant Systems has introduced two media bridges for PC-based video surveillance products with digital video recording (DVR) capabilities. The CX25820 and CX25821 deliver multi-channel, bi-directional uncompressed digital audio and video to the host for preview, processing or compression via an integrated PCI Express (PCIe) interface. PCIe is a serial bus technology that enables cost-effective and scalable high-bandwidth content capture on computers and other consumer electronics devices. The new Media Bridge can be used with the company's CX25853 video decoder to form a complete 8-channel, industry-standard "D1" digital video solution for real-time video surveillance DVR applications. In addition, these highly integrated device combinations help product developers reduce the number of previously required 9 components to two, significantly reducing raw material costs and simplifying the design process.

Conexant's Media Bridge is the latest in this line of products and is developed exclusively for video surveillance applications. The CX25820 and CX25821 are based on a flexible architecture with an integrated two-way audio and video interface. These devices can simultaneously connect multiple ITU-R BT.656/VIP2.0 video and (Inter-IC Sound, I2S) audio streams via PCIe. For transmissions from the host, the video interface can be configured in "data pump" mode to facilitate the transfer of normal 8 or 16 bit data to the card. These devices can also be configured to use an advanced H.264 video compression codec interface to facilitate efficient transfer of compressed data from the card to the host processor.

The main specific video surveillance features include programmable logic that can be used to detect the motion that will be generated, the industry standard BT.656/VIP2.0 video stream. When this happens, the alarm message can be sent to the host processor via the PCIe bus. The CX25820/1 Media Bridge also has the ability to reduce the 4:2:2 format to the 4:1:1 format, reducing the bandwidth per pixel from 16 to 12 bits. This increases the number of uncompressed video streams that can be sent over the PCIe bus.
