Approximately a year after its release, Oculus Story Studio announced that Dear Angelica's VR movie will be available for free on the Oculus Store.
Oculus Story Studio is an emerging media studio that is exploring how to tell stories in virtual reality. As a result of the experiment, the studio currently has only two works. They are completely different types.
"Dear Angelica" is a story about the hero Jessica entering her mother Angelica's fantastic memory and the source of the cover dragon. Her mother is an actor who has participated in various types of films during her career, including drama, horror films and children science fiction films. Soon the scene became less bizarre. Jessica sat in the room and I stood behind her and looked at the Impressionist furniture she depicted. This story does not involve the use of games as a means of communication. Instead, it requires the audience to move their own feet to watch different memories.
Not so much as "Dear Angelica" is a movie, rather it is a surreal animation watercolor works. And the most exciting thing is that it is not really like a movie. It is the first work Oculus has ever produced that is clearly different from the flat media. In other words, it is the only piece that cannot be played on a computer screen.
Prior to joining Story Studio, Wesley Allsbrook, Dear Angelica's art director and original painter, had been running her business in traditional art media. Her work has been featured in New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker and other magazines. When she first arrived at Oculus, she intended to do similar work as before, allowing designers to transform her original paintings into virtual reality. Virtual reality is not a replacement of traditional media, but a new creative experience. She said: "I like movies, but I want to stay here and create."
But the studio quickly discovered that the project was not only viewed in virtual reality but also synthesized in virtual reality. For the first time in the creation of Dear Angelica, Quill, the virtual reality drawing tool developed by Oculus, the latest for Allsbrook, was used.
