Xilinx's low-cost display solution for Spartan-3E

Once upon a time, high-definition flat-panel display televisions were expensive for the average consumer. Today, they have been able to be mass produced economically, and the price is acceptable to most families. Display panel manufacturers are expanding their production capacity to meet demand and drive higher consumption.

According to iSuppli's fourth quarter 2005 report, from 2004 to 2009, global LCD and PDP TV shipments will increase from 20 million units to nearly 90 million units. Due to their many technologies and sizes, they are replacing a large number of cathode ray tube televisions, even though they are more expensive than cathode ray tube televisions of the same viewing area.

Consumers now expect these flat-panel TVs to have new features that differentiate them from those with higher resolution, better color reproduction, and minimal digital motion artifacts. These characteristics determine that their price will be higher than the minimum entry price for a particular screen size.

Some companies have advertised superior image enhancement technology and charged a premium for this. So how do you add value-added features to your company's branded product development and test manufacturers without investing a lot of money and resources? Xilinx and its partners have developed a full suite of products that allow display developers to accelerate time-to-market. This includes the SpartanTM-3E Display Solution Board and some advanced video-like processing IP cores to help you accelerate your design.

The Spartan-3E Display Solutions Board includes our best-selling FPGA Spartan-3E devices for consumer applications, as well as memory and rich connectivity support for connectivity to display boards and video/tuner boards.

Why use FPGAs in display applications?

There is a growing desire for digital display products to integrate more features, service more demand, support more standards, and bring to market faster than ever before. ASIC vendors can produce custom chips to meet the needs of all display customers, but it takes more than a year to develop increasingly complex video/image processors, while increasingly sophisticated manufacturing processes will bring Higher NRE fees.

While many semiconductor vendors, such as Pixelworks, Genesis, Trident, Philips, ST, and others, offer ASSP solutions, these solutions do not allow display manufacturers to produce the value-added features they need for their respective branded products. As a result, programmable solutions complement ASIC solutions for more frequent gradual improvements across the system and help ASSP solutions achieve product differentiation. The form of differentiation can be image enhancement techniques, peripheral I/F, storage I/F, connectivity or even a simple design such as GPIO extensions.

Therefore, thanks to its programmability and flexibility, Xilinx FPGAs are an ideal platform for implementing these features. In addition, they are particularly useful in many digital video applications due to their parallel processing capabilities and integrated features specifically designed for the consumer display market. Examples of these features include multi-interface standards for both video and display boards, DSP functionality, digital clock managers, voltage level shifting, and high I/O package options.

In addition to all of these features, SpartanTM-3E FPGAs offer lower prices due to the adoption of more advanced process technologies and larger wafer sizes while maintaining high wafer yields. Interconnect features have always been a traditional advantage of reprogrammable logic, and today, as standards and interface technologies continue to change, interconnect features are becoming more and more necessary in display solutions.

Spartan-3E Display Solution Board

Xilinx is now introducing a development platform that supports the efficient design and validation of leading edge display technologies for flat panel displays, rear projection displays and digital projectors, and its use speeds time-to-market for these designs. With this platform, you can create and modify complex algorithms to enhance display image quality and color settings.

The Spartan-3E Display Solution Board integrates a Spartan-3E 1.6 million XC3S1600E FPGA in a 484-pin BGA package, an associated configuration PROM, and a serial peripheral interface that can be selected to program the FPGA. In addition, the board also contains four 512 Mb & TImes; 16 DDR SDRAM memory, especially suitable for supporting frame buffering.

In addition, the board comes with option boards such as GPIO, USB, CameraLink and DVI option boards. These option boards allow you to easily connect to a standard display or video board and verify connectivity solutions and video/image processing algorithms. Figure 1 shows the Spartan-3E display solution board.

As a display designer, you can use the board to develop better image quality, multiple memory interfaces, and a variety of form factors for a flexible, low-cost, high-performance solution. You can also integrate key display features on a single XC3S1600E Spartan-3E device, such as integrated microcontrollers, embedded MicroBlazeTM 32-bit RISC processors, LVDS, RSDS and mini-LVDS interfaces, parallel digital signal processing, on-chip memory And high-speed external memory access. Reference design and IP

In conjunction with the Spartan-3E Display Solution Board, Xilinx also offers related reference designs to enhance image quality. These display solution reference designs include accurate gamma correction, image jitter engine, color temperature correction, and false contour reduction. With these designs, you can quickly develop a base platform that can be brought to market, and then develop other features such as sharpness enhancement, dynamic gamma correction, or noise suppression.

Xilinx also has other display solutions from third-party developers. For example, Digital Design CorporaTIon () provides fully tested advanced soft cores including OpenGL, symbol overlay, and scaling/decimation. Table 1 shows the various display and video board application reference designs from Xilinx and its partners.

in conclusion

The image quality of flat panel displays is highly dependent on subjective perception, and image enhancement algorithm specifications are still evolving. As a result of this development, Xilinx FPGAs and reference designs allow you to modify image enhancement algorithms faster and easier.

Because the Xilinx Spartan family is used in high-volume consumer applications such as DVD players, plasma displays, and HDTVs, you can ensure a highly reliable and stable component supply for your consumer applications. Xilinx will continue to add new market-oriented features to keep up with new standards and displays
